Responsibilities

Database Administration & Engineering
• Provide full, all-round administration of SQL Server across on-premises VMware and Azure Cloud environments.
• Install, configure, patch and maintain SQL Server instances and databases.
• Automate most repetitive work.
• Develop, review and optimise stored procedures, queries and indexes; resolve performance issues where required.
• Manage backup, restore, security and access controls, and database health in line with client standards.
• Act as a technical escalation point within the team, working with vendors when issues go beyond internal support.

Daily Operations, Monitoring & Reliability
• Complete the morning run of production checks: system health, overnight jobs/batches, monitoring and alert review.
• Proactively monitor database platforms with tools such as Redgate (SQL Monitor) and Azure Monitor and refine alerting and thresholds.
• Take part in daily cross-team stand-ups and track work through ADO boards.

Service Management & Governance
• Handle work raised through ITSM (incidents, BAU tasks and service requests) and carry it through to delivery in ADO.
• Own incidents as the DRI: triage, resolve, run RCA and blameless post-mortems, and feed problem records back to development.
• Automate alert management.
• Manage and resolve database incidents, communicating clearly with stakeholders until closure.
• Raise, document and implement changes following client governance, including presenting at the Change Advisory Board (CAB).
• Follow data protection controls for PII data, including taking part in DPIA (Data Protection Impact assessment) processes.
• Communicate clearly and promptly with technical and business stakeholders throughout incidents and changes.

Automation & Continuous Improvement
• Find and remove repetitive toil using PowerShell/dbatools, T-SQL, SQL Agent/Elastic Jobs and ADO pipelines.
• Build runbooks and self-healing remediation for recurring alerts.
• Bring database change into CI/CD (Redgate / SSDT) with release validation.

Projects & Data Integration
• Support project work alongside BAU as needed, in line with the client change portfolio and roadmap.
• Support data flows for the newly introduced Dynamics case and claims process, including Azure based pipelines built with Azure Data Factory.
• Help with Azure Synapse, ETL and batch processing where relevant.
• Advise on design for reliability, cost and security for new or changing database workloads, including moves from VMware to Azure.

Security & Data Protection
• Handle PII data in line with client data protection controls and take part in DPIA processes.
• Apply least-privilege, auditing and encryption standards across both estates.

Documentation & Knowledge Management
• Produce and maintain clear, accurate documentation, runbooks, procedures and provisioning records in Confluence.
• Keep configuration, provisioning and operational records up to date to support knowledge sharing and continuity.

Essential skills

  • Strong, hands-on experience as a SQL Server DBA covering administration, configuration and performance tuning.
  • SQL Server experience in both VMware-virtualised and Azure Cloud environments (e.g. Azure SQL / SQL on Azure VMs).
  • HA/DR expertise: Always On AGs, FCIs, log shipping, geo-replication, and backup/restore testing.
  • Practical understanding of SRE principles: SLIs/SLOs, toil reduction, RCA and post-incident review.
  • Good T-SQL skills, including writing, troubleshooting and optimising stored procedures.
  • Scripting and automation skills (PowerShell/dbatools, T-SQL, Python).
  • Experience working with ITSM processes: incident, service request and change management,
  • including CAB.
  • Experience with Azure DevOps (ADO) boards for task tracking and delivery.
  • Good documentation skills (e.g. Confluence).
  • Excellent communication skills, with confidence managing incidents and changes with technical and business stakeholders.
  • Experience handling sensitive or PII data and following data protection controls (GDPR, DPIA).

Desired skills

  • Note: Azure and data integration skills are secondary to the core SQL Server DBA skill set.
  • Redgate tooling (SQL Monitor, SQL Change Automation / Flyway) and Azure Monitor / Log Analytics.
  • Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, and general ETL/batch experience.
  • Microsoft Dynamics data flows and integrations.
  • Database CI/CD with ADO pipelines; Infrastructure as Code (Bicep/Terraform) exposure.
  • Azure cost optimisation (FinOps) for data platforms.
  • Certifications: Microsoft Azure Database Administrator Associate (DP-300), Azure Administrator (AZ104), VMware VCP, ITIL Foundation, SRE Foundation.
